Understanding Autism and ADHD individually is becoming increasingly common, but when they occur together—known as AuDHD—the intersection can be challenging to navigate. Dr Khurram Sadiq, a consultant psychiatrist and leading expert in Autism and ADHD, has released an essential new book, Explaining AuDHD, designed to demystify the combined diagnosis through clear explanations and real-life experiences.

In his book, Dr Sadiq explores the complexities and nuances of AuDHD, highlighting how these two conditions intersect, overlap, and affect each other. Using genuine stories from individuals who live with AuDHD, the guide offers readers valuable insights into how Autism and ADHD can manifest differently when they coexist.

Dr Sadiq notes, “The co-occurrence of Autism and ADHD is in the range of 50% to 60%. Some people may consider one condition first if it is more prominent. Others with a variable presentation of Autism and ADHD will not be sure about which they have.”

Explaining AuDHD is particularly valuable for readers who:

  • Are exploring whether they might be neurodivergent.
  • Are undergoing or considering an assessment for Autism and/or ADHD.
  • Have recently received an AuDHD diagnosis and seek practical guidance on next steps.

“The most important thing is knowledge,” explains Dr Sadiq. “The eyes cannot see what the mind does not know. You cannot expect people to recognise AuDHD if they have not been told about it. How do we expect professionals such as teachers and doctors to know about it if it has not been included in their academic curriculum?”

Addressing broader health inequalities, Dr Sadiq adds, “NHS England has spoken about the cross-section of educating all health professionals to be able to pick up these things. Health inequalities exist when you cannot reach specific people. The current level of research is biased to the ethnic population as more research is done on white males in terms of neurodevelopmental conditions.”

On the intertwining nature of Autism and ADHD, Dr Sadiq provides a unique metaphor: “Autism is like a parent to ADHD—it does not allow it to be anarchic. ADHD is like a friend to autism—it does not let it become too recluse.”

The book’s accessible style helps readers understand how to advocate for themselves effectively, communicate with loved ones, and navigate daily challenges associated with AuDHD. Dr Sadiq provides a clear framework for understanding one's mind and developing strategies to manage symptoms, enhance strengths, and improve overall well-being.

If you or someone you know is grappling with questions around AuDHD, this guide offers a comprehensive starting point. Explaining AuDHD is now available online and in bookstores.
