Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects both children and adults. It is characterised by symptoms such as difficulty regulating attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. These symptoms can have a significant impact on a person's daily life, affecting their academic, occupational, and social functioning.

One of the main symptoms of ADHD is difficulty regulating attention. This can manifest as difficulties focussing on particular tasks for  extended periods, easily getting distracted by external stimuli, and having a hard time completing tasks. Additionally, people with ADHD may have difficulty following instructions, paying attention to details, and remembering information. Additionally, people with ADHD can also hyperfocus on things that interest them, meaning that they can fixate on a subject for an extended period of time.

Impulsivity is another symptom of ADHD. This can include acting without thinking, interrupting others, and making rash decisions. People with ADHD may also have difficulty waiting their turn or controlling their emotions.

Hyperactivity is another symptom of ADHD. This can include fidgeting, squirming, and an inability to sit still. Children with ADHD may also have difficulty playing quietly or engaging in activities that require concentration.

In addition to these symptoms, people with ADHD may also experience other problems such as difficulty regulating their emotions, low self-esteem, and social difficulties.

It's important to note that not everyone with ADHD will experience all of these symptoms, and the severity of symptoms can vary greatly from person to person. Additionally, ADHD can be accompanied by other disorders, such as anxiety or depression.

If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of ADHD, it's important to seek to understand the condition. A qualified healthcare professional, such as a psychiatrist, can help diagnose ADHD and develop an appropriate treatment plan. Treatment options include medication, therapy, and lifestyle changes. With the right support, people with ADHD can lead successful and fulfilling lives.
